Pros & Cons of Lifted Trucks

A lift kit is a kit that raises the height of either the body or the suspension of your truck. Installing a lift kit on your truck is a great way to improve its style and off-road performance, but it also has its drawbacks, so keep these pros and cons in mind when you’re deciding what the best option for you is.

Pros

The look. When you install a lift kit, you get extra height that makes your truck look customized and undeniably cooler. A lift kit lets you install bigger tires, too, which definitely add to the effect.

Better visibility. When you’re sitting higher, you can see more of what’s in front of you and around you, which lets you drive safer. This is helpful no matter where you’re driving, but it’s especially good for off-roading, where visibility is key to avoiding dangerous obstacles.

Off-roading clearance. If you’re a fan of off-roading, installing a lift kit is a great way to get more ground clearance for driving over boulders and logs. And you don’t have to be off-road for a lift to be advantageous — a lifted truck is less likely to get damaged when you drive over a big pothole or other large object.

Cons

Difficult handling. Making your truck taller means raising the center of gravity, which can impact handling, make turns trickier, and even increase your risk of rollover. If you’re going to lift your truck, you need to be willing to take extra precautions, like driving slower.

Cost and warranties. Lifting your truck might turn out to be more expensive than you think. Keep in mind that you’ll probably have to get new tires, and you may be required to make other modifications to your truck to comply with state law. Plus, installing a lift kit might void your truck’s warranties.
